Institut Sa Palomera

Established in 1970, Institut Sa Palomera is a Secondary School, a High School and a Vocational Education and Training School located in Blanes, Spain. Providing education for a total of 825 students, the centre has a staffing capacity for 72 professors (18,5 of whom working in Vocational Education and Training).

Blanes is a popular touristic town and municipality in the region of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The name of the centre comes from the Sa Palomera rock, the big rock that separates two of the four regions existing in Catalonia - Girona and Barcelona region - and is considered symbolically the beginning of the Costa Brava, which stretches from Blanes up to the French border. The socio-economic status of the town is low as many families who have been affected by the global economic crisis are still struggling to make ends meet.

Long-term unemployment, migration issues and the risk of social exclusion are the main problems of the community. In order to improve the quality of life of its citizens, Institut Sa Palomera main aims are:

  • To improve students’ learning outcomes;

  • To promote cultural diversity and inclusion;

  • To foster social cohesion and a sense of community;

  • To promote students’ achievement and performance;

  • To strengthen students’ cultural training;

  • To develop transnational cooperation and promote exchanges of good practice;

  • To deepen e-learning.

The center carries out its activities in cooperation with European partners with a view to implementing the European Union’s fundamental values: respect for human dignity and human rights, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law. The center has a 10 year experience and know-how implementing bilateral exchange projects with the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy. These projects have been funded by the students families on a peer-to-peer basis.
